THE CONTINUING ADVENTURES OF .... Ha'Aretz Lev Gadol (Big Heart)
HEART

Heart went home to the Pallins in New Mexico. Sam took her home in a Sherpa bag in the same cabin with him in the plane. She is the litter sister of Reva and Boker, and a younger sister to Stella; Blanca, Tiny "Princess" Tina, and Tobey. She looks like she's favoring her dad.

Below is a letter from Heart's family.....

Heart has 2 speeds: full-out-fast and dead asleep.  She and Shorty run constantly around the place.  Her abdominal muscles have tightened and hypertrophied to the point the umbilical hernia has now closed completely.  Whereas Friday used to sit majestically and watch Shorty heel the horses, Heart copies everything Shorty does and is heeling like the heeler mix does.  She bites at the horses legs but hasn’t been kicked yet.  I say “yet” because our horses are so used to dogs that they play and take turns chasing.  They will kick a dog if she gets too obnoxious, but usually it’s just a halfhearted blow to teach a lesson.  They will let the dogs chase them for awhile and then it’s their turn to chase the dogs.  The spotted horses in the new pictures are our two yearlings.  They are juveniles themselves and they like to play and run.  The dogs also have charge of three huge feral barn cats.  The cats keep the messy birds out of the barn and keep the rodents down.  Rodents =  rattlesnake meals.  No rodents/no snakes.  No rodents also mean less chance of exposure to the Hanta Virus which is endemic in NM and very dangerous to humans.  The dogs keep away the Coyotes who would eat the cats.  So we have a sort of a closed loop ecosystem.  Our old 110 lbs lab is not much of a threat to the Coyotes anymore.  Too slow and arthritic.  Shorty is too small to scare them away on her own.  But as a pair , Shorty and Heart are very aggressive and intimidating.  Heart is already a ferocious watchdog.  Karen is betting Heart will be small, maybe 40 to 45 lbs., but I am observing rapid maturation and I bet she will be well within the standard for bitches at 55 to 60.  She is about 30 lbs at 4.5 months.  We are especially vigilant about chasing cars (obvious reason) which these Canaans seem to enjoy.  But she is pretty obedient and so far we have been able to restrain her.

There’s the latest news.

Below is an email from Heart's family.....

Heart is in high season just now and we worry about her getting out and breeding.  Last night we called her. She always comes immediately.  We walked the compound in the dark thinking she may have jumped the fence.  We called and called.  Finally I saw her lying quietly in a dark corner with a huge jackrabbit at her feet.  She stared at me out of the darkness with a hostile, threatening look, daring me to take her prize.  It was the biggest jackrabbit I have ever seen. She lay on the ground with the rabbit grasped tightly between her front paws.  When I grabbed a leg of the critter Heart immediately backed off and sat up, very proud of herself.  She followed me to the dumpster and sat at a respectful distance while I disposed of the rabbit.  She is a very good dog.

another email from Heart's family....

We just came down from the Zuni Mountains where we camped and rode horseback for 2 weeks.  Heart was in heat but she stayed in camp and trailed along with us on horseback.  She made it through another season with out conceiving mongrels.  Heart watches the camp and protects the stock.  She plays with the other dogs and never shows a sign of aggression, except toward vehicles.  She continues to hunt and kill game. But I can take away her prize and she never threatens me.  She is just a very smart dog with an incredible nose, very obedient and really loveable. Canaans are a very good fit for us.  She even stopped trying to kill the Billygoat.  He is one of her flock now, and has protected status.
