HISTORY OF HA'ARETZ CANAAN DOGS

Ha’Aretz since 1997

On August 12, 1997, the breed was fully accepted into the Herding Group, and its Studbook became a part of the AKC Registrar, then under the direction of Alice O’Conner.  The moment was almost anti-climactic because we had waited so long, and countered almost insurmountable challenges.

All-breed judge, Mrs. James Edward (Anne Rogers) Clark, judged the CDCA’s first annual national specialty a few days after recognition.  Two distinct types were shown (now referred to as "styles").  “Ha’Aretz Gimel Wafi” and her then four-month-old daughter, “CH Hadar Ha’Aretz Happy Paws,” were there, as were “Ha’Aretz Yod Esprit de Corps CD,” cover girl on the AKC GAZETTE, August issue, 1997.  Wendy Sostock is her owner.  Dr. Katryna Bogovich brought her first Canaan Dog, “Ha’Aretz Nikita.”  “Niki” would remain her beloved pet.  “Esprit” would earn her CD Title, CGC Certificate, and contribute two litters to the breed.  “Ha’Aretz Gimel Wafi” (“Abbey”) would become a pivotal brood bitch for her bloodline and the breed.  She would be bred twice to “CH Dylan,” and had been bred to “Farsight Tilsam,” “Dylan’s” grandson, to produce “CH Paws,” and also “CH Hadar Ha’Aretz Hannah.” “Paws” would be campaigned in 1999 and 2000, become the Number One Canaan Dog in national group ratings, and win the breed at Westminster in 2000.  “Abbey’s” litter of three males by CH “Dylan” produced CH “Hadar Ha’Aretz Kramer,” “CH Hadar Ha’Aretz Mr. Spock RivRoc” and “Hadar Ha’Aretz Northern Snow,” Jake,” all of whom sired litters for the breed.  “Abbey’s” second litter by CH “Dylan,” produced two females, “CH Hadar Ha’Aretz Tatele’s Neshamele,” “Lucy,” and "Hadar Ha’Aretz Naaca,” both of whom produced litters.

“CH Paws” was also bred to “CH Dylan,” and before starting her specials career, she whelped the Ha’Aretz “Pei” litter of two champions:  “CH Ha’Aretz Pei Mishacam” and “CH Ha’Aretz Pa’amonit” “Peeracam.”  “Mishacam” sired four litters to date, and “Peeracam” is expecting her third litter after two successful outcrosses to “Velikaya’s Boker Tov” “Ore,” and CHF Ezra Taft Benson,” “Ezzie.”  The sire of her third expected litter is “CH Cherrysh Coat of Many Colors,” “Joseph,” grandson of  “CCA CH Ariel Shin Ha’Aretz of Briel” through his dam, “Briel’s Hatikvah bat Ariel,” “Tiki.”

“CH Paws” had a third litter, a repeat breeding of the litter sired by “CH Mishacam,” that produced Joe Bartelomeo’s “Noah” (Ha’Aretz Rishon Noah”); Heidi Hiller’s and Corey’s “Sugar” (Ha’Aretz Rotem Sugar”) and  “Remmie,” (“Ha’Aretz Riddle Rock Candy Rap”), who stayed home with us.

Ch. Ha'Aretz TZ Starlite
“CH Starli” (“CH Ha’Aretz TZ Starlite”) went on the campaign trail with Nancy, who calls her a “real Canaan Dog.”  I call her a “shikseh,” a name that does not do justice to a typey, elegant Canaan Dog bitch.  Her litter sister, “CH Dari,” (“CH Ha’Aretz TZ L’Chaim Dariel”), owned by Audrey Biemann and shown by Ann Skylar-Cobbett, won BOS at the AKC Invitational last year, and got herself invited to Crufts! “Starli” whelped 3 puppies by "Ch. Mishacam".

On July 14, 2001, the Ha’Aretz “K” (“Kof”) litter was born.  Their sire is “CHF Ezra Taft Benson” (“Ezzie”), and their dam, “CH Ha’Aretz Pa’amonit,” (“CH Peeracam”).  All six went into the world to seek their fortune, and fortunately, they did not go too far. “Keziah” went to the Harrintons in Massachusetts who love her as a pet and show dog.  When she is two, she’ll be bred to “CH Mishacam.”  “Kiba” went to Andi and Curt Conner in Iowa.  “Kiba” resists going into the breed ring, and her family loves her no less for that.  She may compete in agility!  When she is two, she will be bred, either to “CH Mishacam” or to her “bro” “Zeke,” who is not really her “bro.”  We can thank Andi for getting the HaAretz List up and running!  Beautiful “Ashe Lee K’Tanah,” stays home with Linda Druhan, who is ready to welcome another Ha’Aretz puppy.  Is Linda a glutton for punishment, or what?  Linda had a birthday cake for “Ashe Lee’s” first birthday!  “Oscar,” the “big puppy,” lives in Chicago and runs in the Park near the Lake with his owner, Jonathon Hart; “Hertzi” lives Chris Miller and the River Rock Clan in Georgia, and looks for majors!  “Kaiser,” lives near Washington, DC.  This litter is uniform in type and temperament!  “Oscar” is by far bigger than his littermates in size!

We have many people and puppies to greet on this site!  Please chime in and tell us about your dogs.  Join the Ha’Aretz List to chat or report.  The List was formed so that the owners of the “K” litter could communicate, and grew immediately to include the “TZ” (“Tzadeh”) litter, and now all of Ha’Aretz, including involved people without dogs. Our goal is to maintain and continue the essence of the Canaan Dog breed with emphasis on type, temperament, structure, movement, sunny dispositions and health, and to be able to predict, preserve and conserve these qualities.  We invite puppy and show reports, photos and opinions, and well-mannered discussions of all related topics.  If you would like to be added to this list contact Bryna Comsky at bcomsky@aol.com
