RECOMMENDED READING

  • PARIAHUNDE, “Pariah Dogs,” the seminal work on the breed, is a treasury of references, photos, revealing anecdotes and scientifically oriented observations.  It is written by Drs. Rudolf and Rudolphina Menzel, the founders of the breed, and translated by Bryna Comsky.
     
  • “Pariah Dogs” was published in Leipzig in 1960 by “Das Neue Brehm-Buecherei,” and has been out of print for three decades.  In 1982 and 2002, I translated it into English.  “Pariah Dogs” is a “must read” and belongs in everyone’s reference library.   • Alpine Press has published “The Israel Canaan Dog” by Myrna Shiboleth.  The chapter on North American Canaan Dogs, contributed by Mrs. Jay C. (Bertha) Sheaffer, contains accurate reference material and pictures.
       
  • Catherine “Kit” Braund’s “The Uncommon Breeds” contains a chapter on Canaan Dogs. Most of the information was contributed by Mrs. Judith K. Ardine.   
     
  • Cathy Flamholz’ book on rare breeds has a chapter on Canaan Dogs. 
     
  • Bonnie Wilcox DVM and Chris Walkowicz’ coffee table sized book "Atlas of Dog Breeds" has a chapter with pictures on the breed.   
     
  • Simon & Schuster published a paperback, DOGS, which has a picture of  “Spatterdash Dreidle” and a coded breed description.   
     
  • Mordecai Siegal’s “Dog Owner’s Bible” has a chapter on Canaan Dogs written by Stuart Street.  Roger Caras wrote the Introduction, and a photo of Spatterdash Limor and me is featured.  HOUSE BEAUTIFUL Magazine carried two columns by Mordecai Siegal about Canaan Dogs.   
     
  • TFH Publications has a handbook by Victor Kaftal and Lee Boyd for sale.
